Summer Students - Class of 2018

It’s that time of the year again when we welcome eager summer students into the lab to try their hand at a research project. This year, theRubinlab is hosting Cayla Pinheiro and Alix Nelson who are going into their 2nd and 3rd years of the DVM program respectively.

Cayla is going to be characterizing a set of canine Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates that we’ve been collecting from a Prairie Diagnostic Services since late 2013. Over the summer, she’s going to work to determine their susceptibility to antimicrobials, identify the genetic basis of resistance (depending on what she finds!) and use DNA fingerprinting techniques to compare the relatedness of these bacteria.

Alix is going to be working on a collaborative project with the Ruzzini lab to determine the strategies that Staphylococcus pseudintermedius uses to resist sulfonamide antimicrobials. This work will involve analyzing some whole genome sequences (generated Roshan Priyantha, Rubin lab alumni), some creative co-culture experiments and high performance liquid chromatography.

Looking forward to an exciting summer of science!
