It’s the 3rd annual superbug hunt for class, and we have a winner. For the VTMC 347 class (Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology), the WCVM class of 2021 was sent out with a set of swabs and a mission to find the most super-superbug for their lab assignment. Students had a chance to identify their organism by analyzing its 16S rRNA sequence and test its susceptibility to antimicrobials. The winning group identified a Staphylococcus saprophyticus resistant to oxacillin (methicillin resistant) and erythromycin. Their prize was the 2018 limited edition VTMC347 mug featuring a picture of the winning petri-dish.
